The Crystal Man:

Moss Agate

John Burchard

Moss agate, or dendritic agate, is a volcanic stone consisting mostly of silicon oxides. All agates are quite hard, ranging from 6.5<196>7.0 on the hardness scale. Moss agate is thus suitable for most types of jewelry and ornaments and for talismans of all sorts. It occurs in a variety of colors from dark green, black and white, to dark red with yellow. The most common of all the Moss Agates is the dark green and white variety. The agate appears to contain plant or tree fossils in it, but it is the incorporation of manganese ore and pyrolusite during the different stages of cooling that causes the markings.

Moss agate, like most other gemstones, has earned a metaphysical nickname of sorts, "The Mental Balancing Stone." Legend has it that this is due to its duality, that it contains both male and female aspects. Because of this, some say that if you carry or wear moss agate, it will enhance your ability to utilize both sides of your mind when making decisions. Other uses of this stone include: preventing mental illness; making warriors strong and victorious over their enemies; warding off self-induced anger, bitterness and other negative vibrations; purifying sacred areas.

May you walk with the wisdom of the stones.

Ask the Crystal Man

My son has been having nightmares and wakes up screaming in the middle of the night! Is there a stone or crystal that can help calm him and help him sleep better?

There most certainly is: Lepidolite. It is a light purple stone that usually contains pink tourmaline. It is this combination that helps calm unsettled energies and aids in peaceful sleep.

I'm married to a person who has recently quit drinking and is trying to get back on his feet. Can a particular crystal aid him in his recovery?

From the way you worded your question, I assume you are talking about a recovering alcoholic. Yes, there is such a stone: the Botswana Agate.

I suffer from various skin problems such as acne, boils and this kind of thing. What should I do?

First, see a doctor to determine the cause (such as diet, chemical imbalance, etc.). As for the crystal, some say Hematite is the most powerful skin healing stone.

I'm looking for sexual gratification, what stone should I use?

I could respond to this question in so many humorous ways—but I won't. Looking for sex, try ruby or garnets.
