Your Soul's Growth

By W. C. Adrian

Are you aware that your soul has growth pangs and goes through mid-life crises? Everybody knows about reincarnation, but very few have ever explored the fact that the soul, in its many lives in this material reality, goes through a series of dramatically different growth stages. Each soul grows through the same, somewhat predictable, experiences: childhood traumas, the adolescent conviction that it can conquer the world, the troubled maturity of middle age, and the caring wisdom of an Old soul.

At each of these stages of growth, the soul expresses itself with significantly different attitudes, goals, and motivations. This complex shifting and weaving of different sets of drives are directly reflected in us as inner urges and promptings. In responding to these urges, on occasion, people are driven to act the way they do.

These core level or soul sourced motivations, goals and attitudes bubble up within us and are very difficult to deny. Yet they keep changing from one series of lives to the next, reflecting the growing maturity of our soul as it experiences life in this reality. As our guise changes from man to woman, from black to white, from rich to poor in our many incarnations, the soul itself is going through a complex learning process.

Interestingly, this learning process is somewhat predictable and planned. Obviously, the concept of the growth of the soul is inherent in the multitude of books dealing with reincarnation. These discussions, usually anecdotes, allude to the learning process of the soul as it goes through a series of experiences here in the material reality. This information implies that we are growing closer to God, yet nowhere is there a description of the broad systematic pattern in the evolution and the development of the soul. Even though souls have a predictable pattern of learning in their evolution through many lives, the pattern of these sequential stages of growth simply is not evident in these anecdotal stories. Specialists have mapped the predictable stages of human maturation describing child development and chronicling the passages that occur much later in life. Yet, to my knowledge, the soul's learning process has never been fully explored. I have found no outline of the broad range of lessons to be learned by the soul in this reality and why a being would choose this particular reality to explore those lessons.

The book, How to Understand Your Innermost Urges, identifies the full learning curriculum that this material reality provides, and then breaks down that curriculum into its component elements. Many fascinating insights into the soul's learning process have been uncovered in developing this book. Not the least of which is the dramatically different objective that each soul has at the different stages of growth.

For example, at one stage our soul is urging us to do whatever it takes to succeed, to be `top gun,' to be the best. At another stage, our soul demands that we become exquisitely sensitive and caring with our friends or (even) business acquaintances. These business associates can be the very same ones who, at the previous stage of soul growth, we might have been glad to take advantage of in our drive to succeed.

Did you ever wonder why you just have to do some things? By understanding the general pattern of how the soul evolves over many lifetimes, it becomes very clear what those inner urges are and where they come from. Do you wonder why other people have to act the way they do? Why does Uncle John have to be so annoyingly materialistic, or why does your child have to be so sensitive?

By identifying a few characteristics of a person, using this map of the soul's growth stages, you can get an idea of where they are in their development. Knowing this, you will be able to better evaluate how to best relate to them and what is realistic to expect from them. By knowing what is possible, you will not be constantly frustrated by expecting what is beyond their realm of capability and can accept them for what they are. With this awareness of a person's potential in mind, you will know how best to reach them.

What follows is a summary of the soul's stages of growth, and are excerpts from the book. This new perspective maps the topology of our soul's growth process from our first step into this reality to our last exit.

The Child Soul

The Child soul is a very simple, uncomplicated being. They are at the very beginning of their development, and do not have a view of the world that goes beyond them. As a result, these people are basically interested in only themselves and so, of course, their disposition is one of a rather selfish nature.

At the same time they exhibit qualities of acceptance and trust. There is newness or a quality of surprise that they continually express that causes all things to be exciting for them. They always seem to be surprised at discovering the new things that they can do and are happy to show those things to someone else. These are beautiful, endearing qualities.

Their emotions swing quite readily, they seem to reflect outside influences more than their own internal awareness. They are very much a reflection of the world around them. They are not starters in this world, but simply reactors to the world. A Child soul can function in this reality, but they are typically inflexible and unsure. They have in their mind a certain set of rules and regulations. They feel that everyone should follow their rules and regulations. It is very unnerving to them that others would disagree or have another point of view.

To the Child soul, the world is black and white. They are not able to see the variations, the differences, and the nuances. They just do not have the experience in this reality to grasp the subtle variations.

If they were given something to do that they do not like, they would agree to do it verbally rather than disagree. As soon as it gets too uncomfortable, they disappear; they will turn away from it. Avoidance is a typical solution for them.

They would not oppose things, though. Opposition implies struggle or standing up to something, and they do not have the inner resources to do that. They have not evolved to where they think that much about things and so they do not have the strong opinion that is necessary to make a stand.

They only try to accomplish the things that come easily each day. They do not struggle. They do not set long term goals. Their strongest desires are to have just the very bare necessities of life. They do not expect great things, they do not want great things, they only want those things that are of need to them. They only do those things that are of immediate need, such as food, clothing, and shelter. Prosperity to them is having 10 dollars in their pocket for tonight, and they are fine. Now this does not apply to everybody, but it seems to be the common Child soul perspective. For those who want to work, if they have a job and can stay at the job for forty years, then that is prosperity, that is success, and that is the good life.

Personal relationships for the Child soul are fairly simple—they are either good or they are bad. There does not seem to be a lot of gray areas between. If the relationships are good, they continue. If there is a problem, they break apart. They do not seem to put a lot of energy into trying to hold something together. A Child soul also can be one who does not consider the trauma that others may be going through. There is not the ability to have a sense for other people so that they can have empathy or understanding for someone else. They might even be quite brash in the way they talk, not even thinking that they might be hurting anyone, it just comes out that way.

Loving for a Child soul occurs on a very basic level. They do not have the kind of love that understands and tolerates and really gives in return. It is more you love me, I love you. It is very simple. As a result, love, romance and intimate relationships are very difficult for the Child soul. They do not know what they want and what they need in life. So, they go to the very basic elements that can satisfy them. There is usually the strong physical attraction that begins a relationship, but there is not much understanding and mutual nurturing support that comes with it.

They are usually very erratic in their marriages. They are either just rolling unconsciously through a lifetime of togetherness or there is much bantering and bickering and they break up. Not all the marriages break up, but the Child soul does not fit into marriage comfortably. It is not a strong relationship in either case, in the sense of a loving relationship. They are not capable of it yet. This is sort of a trial and error period of lifetimes for the soul. They learn through, many times, very painful experiences.

There is little hope of developing a nurturing compatible relationship with a Child soul. This soul type is one that has great needs and usually draws to itself, one who can feed it or help it. They like to draw someone who will nurture them. Thus it is not a mutually nurturing relationship where the nurturing goes both ways.

The Young Soul

This is the stage when the soul is reaching out and is eagerly wanting to investigate all things, to accomplish all things, and to feel all things. The Young soul lives life to the fullest. This is a very exciting time. There is a great amount of growth in this stage.

Young souls are adventurous souls with a lot of ranging into new territory. There is a constant seeking and desire to know and to learn. During this period, there is a drive for independence, achievement and recognition. The key watchword for the Young soul is success, and more important the recognition that comes with it.

To realize their need for success and recognition, they soon recognize that they want to become innovators. The innovators are the ones who carve whole new regions of endeavor for themselves and in the process gain the success and recognition that this soul craves. So they look for new areas of business or science or whatever to explore and create. In the process, it is the Young soul that becomes the architect and innovator in most areas of human experience.

The Young souls lay the foundation, they lay the groundwork, and they prepare the way for things to be built on their foundations. Young souls are the movers and the shakers of this reality, the initiators of important pieces of our civilization. In the latter part of the Young soul stage, they become the builders. But they are never the finishers; they do not put on the finishing touches to anything.

In the process of driving hard for success and recognition, the Young souls are eager to take on tasks and often set impossible goals for themselves. They are often not aware that there are limits even to their own abilities. They are very prone to undertake things that are far greater than they can handle. However, this is one of the ways that progress has come to humanity, for during this particular stage, many things are tried, and occasionally some are fulfilled. The Young souls want fortune, achievement, success, they want to be the best that they can be, but they especially want recognition and fame. Young souls are very status conscious and for them, issues of the ego are prominent and worthy of much effort. Ego issues are, for instance, money, status, power, and recognition.

However, these are the negative ways of looking at a very powerful metamorphosis that is happening on the soul level here. This soul, this being has moved from the Child soul stage, where the soul was, to some extent, frightened of the world. At that level, there was a great dependence on those around them to support them and take care of them.

Now in the Young soul stage, this soul wants to conquer the world. This soul is moving from the group focus, where there is a great dependence on the group's support or on someone else's support, to: I'll do this all on my own, thank you! In fact, the Young soul would most likely follow with: And if you don't get with the program and follow in my footsteps, you are really going to screw up.

This establishment of separation and independence is a core objective of our long series of incarnations in the earth reality. No soul can move through this reality without becoming very effective as a separate, independent and complete individual. The Young soul is the epitome of that drive and that expression.

There are some negative experiences for the individual and for others, in the soul's exploration and establishment of the I, the ego, and the glorification of the self. The negative experiences are simply the feedback to the soul that it has gone too far and needs to pull back to find balance. It is this balance between being a forceful and independent person on one hand, and treating others with great care and understanding on the other hand, that is a central focus of all our lives here. Completely empathizing with others is another key focus of learning in this earth's reality, but one that the Young soul does not yet grasp.

The important first step however is to establish the soul's confidence in its ability to stand alone, and to stand much taller than the rest of the crowd. We all must go through the stage of being top gun, the best. After we have learned that we can power drive ourselves to the top, we can relax a bit, now that we have established our superior capabilities for the world to see. More important, as a Young soul, we must see our own undenied achievement.

Confident of our position and capability, we, as Young souls can become a little bit reflective and maybe take a moment to review what is going on around us. At this point, we discover that there is some, or much wreckage. This is the wreckage of other people that we have hurt in our single minded power drive to the top. That wreckage may be our family that we have hurt, or the people in our business that we have manipulated for our own ends—whatever, we get an opportunity to see the cost of our preoccupation with our own success. This awareness and the willingness to do something about it, begins to prepare us to for the eventual move into the Mature soul stage.

The Mature Soul

Having experienced a very strong expression of individuality as a Young soul, the mature soul now begins the process of connecting with others. As Young souls, we looked mainly toward self and self-aggrandizement. But now something is causing us to switch to another perspective.

Mature souls are now beginning to get in touch with what is their true self, and the drive to do this is simply welling up from within. They are realizing that many of the things that they have held to in the past, in the Young soul stage, were of minute or minor importance. Now, it is necessary for them to have a larger view.

They are discovering that there is a need to be more interdependent. Now is the time of being more interested in other people, finding out how they feel and how they react. In short, their focus has shifted to connecting with and deeply caring for others. This is the broadest spectrum of growth of any of the groups.

There was much more time spent in the first two levels, with some significant expansion. But this is the greatest and most challenging expansion experienced, in relatively fewer lifetimes. This new mature soul, begins to learn in two ways. The first is that they observe others and recognize that the things others do may be something they can take into their own way of living. As they try it, they find that it is not so bad, or not so outrageous. So part of this change for the mature soul comes from observing other people and realizing that there is a multitude of ways to make life work. The second way they learn is through experiencing new insights welling up from within them.

Unfortunately, what wells up pushes mature souls to seek. But the Mature soul is not sure what to look for. They do get images or thoughts that seem to guide them as they go along. It is through trial and error that they slowly comprehend these new concepts and insights.

The mature stage is a difficult stage demanding much introspection. If you look at this person from the outside, their life seems to be going along well enough, and yet they are troubled—though the word troubled is too strong. Divine unrest, seems to be somewhat more applicable. It is like a pot of fudge that is boiling along. It is not exploding out all over the stove; it is not truly troubled. It just bubbles along—seeking, finding, and locating.

The Mature soul is being driven to be more concerned with others. Compared with the Young soul stage, the mature soul begins to perceive others in a clearer light than they have ever perceived before. They are much more perceptive about others. In the latter stages of the mature soul, they understand a significant amount about another person, after just an hour's conversation. They instinctively know a great deal about that person, even though most of what they know was not even discussed.

Unfortunately, in the early stages of the mature cycle, there is a tendency to see others in a very critical manner. At the same time, the mature soul knows that having others in their life is very important. So they are really caught in a bind. They would like the ideal person to be there, with whom they could become very close and complete their relationship needs. However, there are not that many perfect people in the world. So there is this push-pull of wanting to criticize, hoping to make the other person more perfect; but also wanting to connect in a more satisfying relationship, and realizing, sometimes too slowly, that their criticism is counterproductive.

Though there are some who appear to be brilliant, most are just ordinary people that somehow seem to get things done. These are the people in the background, that seem to steadily work along. They do not let anything get in the way, nothing stops them. They are almost like a bulldozer slowly moving through any problem there is, just quietly plowing through, and not stopped by anything. They are contributing much more, because they are pushing the boundaries and new understanding is beginning to well up from within. They no longer are entirely dependent on understanding coming out of their work on the material level, but are becoming intuitively aware of solutions. Because of this, they are able to amplify things beyond what they read or experience as a part of their work.

The Mature soul has evolved into a different male/female relationship from the Young soul, once they locate the right partner. It is more of live and let live attitude. This soul is now able to recognize the abilities of another soul and not have to be in charge, or be looked up to as the Young soul required. The mature soul is capable of an equal relationship with a partner.

The Mature soul can recognize their own abilities, but at the same time, they can allow their partner to do the same thing. They can work for a common goal much more than in past incarnations, because in the past, one had to be above the other or one had to be in charge. Now they can both give and take and do it together. Quite a few, possibly half of them, never marry. Those that do marry have long-term marriages. They do not bounce through two or three marriages, they appear to be much more settled. A lot of them seem to choose to be alone rather than have a weak marriage. If they do not find the right person, they do not settle for less. They do not want to go through the pain. They would just as soon be by themselves, rather than try to make something less work. The central change that comes in with the mature soul is the ability to experience compassion and caring for others. Compassion, understanding, and a feeling for others is a great part of the mature soul's life.

The Old Soul

In characterizing the Old soul, you will find they are able to see through the motives of people and they are also able to understand many of the deeper issues. They can go to the depths of the spiritual truth and are willing to interpret those truths for others.

For the Old soul, there is great variety in their expression of themselves. There are the highs and the lows of this particular soul group. There are those who are very famous, and there are those that are very poor and obscure. Yet they are both old in soul and old on the earth. They do not seek glory in any way, because they understand their place, and that it is not important how big or small they appear, but only to know they are serving their fellow humans in important ways. There is a job to be done and they will do it, regardless of the resources given them. They are far more intuitive and knowing and they are far more generous in the ways that they give than the other soul groups.

The Old soul can see beyond the material reality. They see life and people in the true light, that of ongoing, that of partial completion, that of knowing that things will come to pass eventually. By knowing this, it allows them to be more accepting, to have the patience to allow something to work out in its own good time. There is the deep sense of peace, understanding and great patience that goes with them.

The Old soul does not really try to communicate this reality that they see too often because they know there are few who would understand. They will explain it only to those who are willing to listen. For most, who are materially bound, will never hear these words. Those focused on the earthplane must have their physical proof before they can understand or believe.

The Old soul stage is one of demonstrating that the soul can be at peace in this reality. They are able to cope with things that come their way. They are far more at peace with their surroundings than the other stages have been. At this point they realize that this reality is only a temporal state and they do not spend most of their time on earth. They are able to understand that there are many forces influencing what happens to them. Because of this, the Old soul is able to flow with the tide much better than other souls.

This understanding is put into practice, and is exhibited by the way that Old souls respond to life and to the situations around them. They display it by being understanding with other people, and in meeting, guiding and helping other people. They communicate the things that they know, and more than that, they are able to put these things into practice. It is the expression on the human level that makes it meaningful on the soul level.

This understanding is meaningful because they are exhibiting it in a reality that is unwilling to accept such insight. On the earth plane, it is often rejected or people fight against it, or there is a lack of understanding. This is why it is more meaningful, because it does not flow easily here. The source of the Old soul's knowledge and creativity is the key distinction that separates them from all else.

This knowledge and creativity is coming from sources other than the earth plane. In other words, the outside stimuli of the earth and the people they come in contact with are not what stimulate their creativity and the knowledge that is theirs. What is happening is that the learning process occurs on other levels, that learning wells up from within them and they manifest it on the conscious plane.

This learning from within is a very different experience, a very different source of knowledge. So the real learning that has occurred between Mature and the Old soul is the ability to open up to a wholly different level of learning. The Old soul lets this information and learning explode up from within and then shares it with those who understand enough to listen. For the Old soul there is an attitude and a complete commitment toward service. This attitude toward service is totally unlike that at any other soul level. The attitude is this is what is required, this is what is necessary, and I do it. There is no sacrifice, not even an evaluation of the merits involved. They just know intuitively that it is something that needs to be done and I can do it, so I will do it. This service is as natural as breathing and receives the same amount of thought. (If you have had enough interest to read this long and somewhat detailed summary about people and what makes them tick, you have the interests and the drive to understand people. This level of commitment to understanding others is only found in the Mature and Old souls.)

Author Information:

Lenora Huett has been a psychic channel for more than 25 years providing psychic and spiritual counseling world wide. She has been listed in the book Channeling [Publishers: Harper and Row] written by Stanford Research Institute scientist Bill Kautz as one of his top group of effective psychics. The purpose of the book was to describe a new way of dramatically reducing the time required for the initial part of scientific investigations from years to days. The approach used a team of psychics, who would provide through consensus a scientific hypothesis that could be investigated. This book evaluated a large number of psychics and listed those who scored highest in Kautz' evaluations. Lenora was used as a channel in a number of scientific investigations.

In addition, Lenora has channeled a number of books, specifically: Path to Illumination Psychic Beam to Beyond Spiritual Value of Gemstones Amnesia Factor

Lenora currently resides in Watsonville, CA and can be reached at 408-728-9381.

Bill Adrian, in the process of investigating some burning questions about people close to him using Lenora's channel, discovered the source of the conflicts were deep inner motivations within these people. When Bill and Lenora revealed that the source of these core drives were at the soul level, this sparked an insight that suggested a much broader question was involved.

This book has evolved out of the desire to fully explore and understand these broader and more fundamental questions about our inner drives and motivations.

Bill currently resides in Boulder Creek, CA and can be reached at 408-288-8776
