The Seven Faces of Darkness: Practical Typhonian Magic
By Don Webb. Runa Raven Press, P.O. Box 557, Smithville, TX. 78957, 1996. U.S. $16.00 $1.50 p/h, 104 pp.
This is a small but important book which takes the first step in bringing the worship of the Egyptian Spirit Set back to a respectable level. Along with a more accurate portrayal of Set than what is found in many books, The Seven Faces of Darkness contains adaptations of Greco-Egyptian papyri dealing with Set. Even though this means there are some Greek influences presented (such as the association of Set with Typhon), the author gives practical guidelines on how to make use of the papyri and the rituals within. Recommendations for procedures, altar items, magical workings, festivals of Set, a self initiation rite and many rituals culled from the papyri for many purposes are included. Even though there are definite magical aims presented here, the author also emphasizes the importance of the spiritual nature of a person's alignment with Setian energy. The author is the Grandmaster of the Order of Setne Khamuast and a Magus of the Temple Of Set (one of the major satanic organizations), so the viewpoints expressed in the book come from that perspective. Despite this, I think it is important to emphasize that the material he presents is useful for any person who wants to learn more about working with the Spirit Set. Hopefully, this book will change the way people think about one of the many Spirits the Egyptians honored and respected. |
