The Bardic Source Book
By John Matthews
ISBN 0713727853. Blandford/Sterling $14.95
This book is as different as it is possible to be from John Matthew's other book Landscapes of Legend, also reviewed this issue. The emphasis is on the fine detail, and illustrations are few and far between. The Bardic Source Book is a unique collection of material on the Celtic Bards and their traditions. Arthurian writer John Matthews has produced a generous selection of texts by some of the greatest bards, including Taliesan, Myrddin and Aneurin. Many poems are freshly translated, which should be of interest to scholars and it also includes many previously hidden and forgotten writings. It claims to be the only large-scale source book on the Bardic mysteries and covers these in detail in an accessible and readable way. This is a reference book of the first water and is a must for students of all subjects Celtic. Reviewed by Sue Phillips |
